RESEARCH INTERESTS

I started working toward my Ph. D in Ecology as a member of the Shefferson lab in
Fall 2010. My broad interests include evolutionary biology of plants, tropical
ecology, and conservation ecology. I plan to pursue research that combines these
interests by using tropical milkweed,
Asclepias curassavica, a perennial weed that
populates disturbed areas in the neotropics, to answer questions regarding the
evolutionary history and current role of weeds in tropical habitats.  Investigating the
influence of environmental and genetic factors on mechanisms of reproduction
and defense, discovering potential impacts of
A. curassavica on forest habitat, and
determining patterns of gene flow and dispersal of weedy species in tropical
environments hold particular intrigue as research pursuits.
